Another annotation for my nhd project

(14) Hart Diana History Alive Palo Alto California2008
This textbook was helpful with the historical context; of the time period Andy Warhol was most famous. For national history day students need to have historical context for their project. It can’t just be biographical information. The book talked about counter cultural ideas of the 1960’s and how they appeared in magazines, T.V and news forms of expression in art, which is what Andy Warhol, did. That is one way the textbook helped. It talked about the protest at Berkeley college and Woodstock. This is all historical context.

post # 2 oon historical context

(13) ushistory.org independence hall association coyright2008 http//www.ushistory.org/us/The site starts quite popular quotes from the 1960’s. (One or two of them were also in the textbook.) The quotes were: “make love not war. don’t trust any one over 30. Turn on turn in and drop out I am a human being - Please do not fold bend spindlier or mutilate. The site explained how people known as hippie’s changes the way they lived from the way their parents lived. The site said hippies “broke” their parents values. The site was good at talking about the sixties. A lot f o the information is also in the textbook we looked in fro-historical context. The bad thing is it doesn’t tell you whether the mushrooms are the food or something else. It is the first site to mention their new astrological beliefs and new religions. The site also says they thought casually of sex they rejected birth control and experimented with drugs. There was a down side to experimenting with drugs and pregnancies. It says they tested with mushrooms.

(10)Kathleen Krull Lives of the Artists Masterpieces, messes (and What their Neighbors Thought.) Harcourt Brace and Company San diego1995.
This book had many artists. I like when books have multiple artists in one book. The book had a funny caricature of Andy Warhol. Around him are cats, a soup can, paint, a clock, and a cake. These objects that symbolize him. The book talked about these objects. This book had some funny facts that were added bonuses. For example, he had 175 cookie jars and 400 wigs. I liked that this book talked about his food habits. For example, sometime he ate junk food; such as candy, pastries and a whole cake. Other times he ate bean sandwiches or vegetable puree. It talked about his looks and his odd style for example wore a jeweled and feathered wig to his first art show. He wore high-heeled boots and as he got older his sunglasses got bigger. It talked about how at first his living space was terrible. Later on he had a penthouse. This was helpful because it talked about his style and look. I think that is very important to my display board.

This site give s the background information of the time period Andy Warhol was alive. Which is what it’s supposed to do. The site talked about all the different right movement going on; for example, blacks got right to be treated equally and vote. Women then protested to get their rights. Then Mexicans did the same. I like that t his has primary sources I need primary sources. They are important to the project. Gays and lesbians got their rights and that was very important to the time period.

More Annotated Bibliographies/ posts

Here are three new annotated bibliographies/posts for my n.h.d project year two.

(7) Wrbican, Matt. “American Masters: Andy Warhol A Documentary Film.” 2008: PBS 31 Oct 2008 http// pbs.org/wnet American
The website was very specific it says his address was: 37 Orr street Pittsburgh. It told how he was the youngest of 3. The site talked about his childhood. He went to Holmes elementary school and Scheneley high school. The article talked about his mom. For example, she won an award. One fact was he traveled Asia and Europe. The site had lots if dates; it goes in to great specifics. Andy Warhol Knew famous people; he knew Truman capote and Jackie Kennedy.

(8)Andy Warhol Quotes Brainy quotes.com copyright2008: http//www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/andy Warhol.html
This site was a really good site to use if someone needs a quote from Andy Warhol. (Or any one else.) There was a wide selection of quotes it is useful to have a wide arrangement of quotes. There were some really funny quotes and some of his typical quotes. I found it helpful to have some of his quotes in my paper. They were good examples of what I was talking about.

(9) I Shot Andy Warhol, dir Mary Harron. Orion pictures 1996
The movie gave a lot of background on Valerie solanis’s life. It showed that she went to a mental hospital after she shot Andy. It showed how badly Valerie Solanis shot Andy Warhol. I found out She had a horrible life. She was always asking for money because she didn’t have enough. She was an orphan. The movie talked about how She gave great detail to why she shot Andy. She wanted to have Andy film her play but he didn’t. It showed Andy’s factory, (which was a good extra to see what it really looked like.) It was confusing how the movie was filmed, but that showed how Andy filmed/ did his movies.

Andy Warhol’s Soup: More Than Meets the Eye

During the 1960s there were new ideas and change is society.A change in art was pop art. He made people think about art in a new way Andy Warhol, great individual in art history, was the man who came up with the idea of Pop Art. Some people wanted paintings of what they saw in their everyday life. That is what Andy Warhol painted, things he saw in every day life. For example, he painted soup cans because they were what he had for lunch. There were critics who did not like the idea of painting things that were considered unimportant. People asked him “is this considered art?” He threw the question back in their face by saying “Why isn’t it art?” Warhol had an unusual personality and his look stood out, and he that became known to people around the world. He was know for taking portraits of famous people, like Marilyn Monroe, and changed the color of it and did it over so that you notice parts of that painting. He liked to have repetition in his art. He took modern art to the next level by painting the things people would never think of as art; and by turning the question” is that painting art” around. . He influenced new modern art such as Rene Margritte or people who paint things that do not make sense or are not real. Because of Warhol, the definition of art is expanded.

Ergas, G Aimee Artists from Michael Angelo to Maya Lin New York international Thomson publishing company. 1995 Checked 10/9/08
This book gives the basic facts a person needs to know to do a project about Andy Warhol. In this case N.H.D. It gives good quotes, which are useful on the exhibit board or for a play. The book also gives unknown facts; that people would be interested in knowing. For example, Andy Warhol was so mysterious that no one really knows his birthday. Another fact is his parents were immigrants from Czechoslovakia. This book talks a little bit about his child hood. Then it goes in to his young adult life and how he worked for fashion magazines. It goes in to more detail about his artwork and his later work.

Gorman Greg The Warhol Collections The Carnegie museum of Pittsburgh checked2008 the Andy Warhol museum legal information 10/10/08 http//www.Warhol.org/collections/index.asp
This site shows Andy’s self-portrait. His hair is everywhere His hair looks like colored feathers he looks serious. There is a stripe of blue and yellow paint on his eyes. There is a zigzag stripe of blue and green on his mouth, his upper forehead and hair is dark blue the rest of his face is turquoise. I can use this on the exhibit board to show he thought untraditionally and what pop art looks like. On the home page is an image of a boy on a bus pressing his hand to the window at girl looks at him affectionately. There are images of coming up exhibits.

The Andy Warhol foundation for the visual arts Inc Checked 10/10/08 http//www.warholfoundation.org 2002
The site has a picture of a Campbell’s soup can with the label pealing off. Then there’s another picture of just part of the label. The last image is of a regular soup can with the lid coming off. This site gives a lot of biographical information. This is good for a side note/
Side bar of the exhibit board. The site talks about the shows he had for his art the site talks about how he was shot but he did not die for the bullet. He still painted afterward. That show s something a person in this case Andy Warhol did in history plus “invent pop art” this site pretty much mentioned most of his life (except his young childhood) and gave the years of the events too.

This site gave many unknown facts. Facts that weren’t in the books I had looked at or the other website. It went in to great detail about his childhood and his sexuality, religion, death films, music and his dramatic works of art. It talks about an illness he had. An individual that got over an illness should be known in most cases. Especially if the illness was serious. (He was shot and survived that is serious and worth being known. This site gave a wide range of facts about Andy Warhol. It talked about his young childhood; it gave the years such as his early career, the 1960s, when he was shot, the 1970 his religious beliefs, how and when he died, it went on to talk about his paintings, films, music, media and books.

Robert Hughes Andy Warhol (1928-1987) Art.com American visions checked October 13 2008 http//www.artchive.com/artchive/w/warhol.html
This site had a couple facts. This website compared the way Monet painted with the way Warhol painted. For example, Monet used shadows; because they were there in the scene and to show how light changed over time Warhol didn’t use shadows at all Warhol’s paintings show sameness. (Except for the label on the soup cans.) This site also had images of Andy Warhol’s paintings I would use them on the exhibit board. Compare his work to Monet’s work. The site talked about 1961-1962 the years he did the soup cans. For the most part the site is repitive. It did have a list of paintings he did at the bottom of the page. This site had the cow wallpaper I am going to use that on the background of the exhibit board.

Sayre, Henry, Cave paintings to Picasso: the Scoop on50 Art Masterpieces chronicle books LLC San Francisco California2004 checked 10/19/08
On the side of the page there is a time line from1000 B.C. to 2000 A.D there is an asterisks around the 2000 to represent the 1960’s, which is when Andy Warhol painted his artwork. On the second page there is a painting of one of his Campbell’s soup cans the lid is open and the number19c the flavor is Beef Noodle. The first sentence in the book said that Andy Warhol considered a soup can an all American still life. This book focused on the soup phase of Andy’s life that’s what it mainly talked about. The books said people thought his art looked like billboard ads. Andy turned the view of art around. It was useful that it talked about the soup cans in great detail and how he turned art around. That is important to my N.H.D project.

the art of andy Warhol and my choosing

Here is why i chose andy warhol. originally i wanted to do my project on Erin Gruel. she was the teacher to the kids who wrote the freedom writers, but the issue was she is too modern. Our teacher gave us a paper on N.H.D's topic for this year. It mentioned an artist; this made me think of doing an artist for my project.I wanted to do an artist but not the one mentioned in the paper.I decided to do Andy Warhol. The reason I chose andy Warhol are;I like his art, there are debates about whether his paintings are art.(I thought that would make a good point in my presentation). The judges would hopefully be interested in the debate of "are his paintings art. Secondly, I thought they would like that this person is not typical for N.H,D. The competitors usually do people such as, Theodore Roosevelt,Martin Luther king jr. Amelia Airheart. one of the presidents. The third 3rd reason I chose him is he started pop art.i think when your t he person who started something you are important and trying to make a clear statement. That is why i chose andy warhol.

Do your part (part two)

Do your part
Every one should do their part to help out. At constitution high kids are being graded on their community service. Every kid had to fifteen hours of individual service and a group project such as Franks for Frankie.
For my 15 hours I did more than one service. My first service is I watch my cousin every Sunday for 3 hours. He is autistic which can make it tricky. This is a service to my family.
When he first arrives he smacks his lips and says mm. I say, “Your hungry “and he says “yeah” he walks over to the fridge and gets out the bread then he goes to the pantry and gets out the peanut butter. He doe s this every time it is part of his routine. He always has a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. (He eats even if he has just had a large breakfast.) He then usually unloads the toy box we have in the living room over and over again. He touches and feels the toys pressing the buttons that make sounds. Occasionally He will watch either The Red Balloon or home videos of my sister’s birthday. He gets excited when the candles are blown out he blows out the candles as well.
In the fall he likes to walk around the block. In the spring he plays on our hammock. In the summer he plays with the hose. I’ve had my hard times when he has a major meltdown about something he doesn’t quite understand or he can’t communicate what’s bothering him. In the end it’s fixed I love him no matter what.

service learning ideas

Constitution high school is starting service learning projects. It is a big project all the students must brainstorm five to six ideas of what we want to do for the school project. The requirements are to do a school project and 15 hours of service. For my school project i'm thinking of making nice for recycling bins that i will put around the school. In the bins I would recycle paper and plastic items. There would be two be separate bins for the paper items and the plastic. The paper items would recycle are: paper, toilet paper rolls, card board containers etc.
Plastic is elf explanatory any plastic items would go in the bins.I would check about plastic wrappers. Another school idea is I could help tutor.I could pick up trash around the school.I could assist any teachers in doing errands.

I already do service project such as help my uncle every sunday I babysit his son for four hours who is autistic,For my fifteen hours of service I sometimes work for my uncle in his office that would be an option. Another option is to babysit every sunday and count that as fifteen hours after a certain amount of Sundays. plus I could babysit other kids.I could do work for my mom and her job.
one project would be to do service hours at Ronald mcDonald house. This summer I baked for Ronald McDoanld house since their oven broke .One night i made puppets there. I know that Ronald Mcdonald house is a place where families can stay when they have a kids that is sick or having surgery.I could do research on who started Ronald Mconald house or what kind of surgery they treat.
My other idea is similar i could do service hours at C.H.O.P. I could call and see if my audiologist needs help in her department.Or if she has any suggestions on project I can do.I have a lot I do there. So they probably would let me help. There is so much I can research about C.H.O.P and hospitals specifically.
The last idea is pick up trash around my neighborhood or the school neighborhood.I could research what trash is the most harmful to the enviorment

I would like to work on a recycling project for the school and places in my neighborhood if that would be an okay project. I could make it bigger and research recycling materials. Plus my family just started to recycling things like paper and paper towels, box containers, food containers and many reusable items. It makes me feel good to see how much were recycling(high five to the great start on my family project.)

I Thought for the fifteen hours of service I could work/help out at Ronald Mcdonald house. This summer I baked food like coffee cake etc for them since they were redoing their kitchen. I also made puppets one night as a fun activity. For the research part I could research when Ronald Mcdonald started and who started it as well as some of the things they help kids with.I know that Ronald Mcdonald is a place where kids and their families can stay while a kid is seriously sick or having surgery. A suggestion they have is take the kids on an outing like to the zoo.Or just play with them and have fun. Just make sure they have fun.So maybe i'll take one or two kids to the zoo or a movie.

Another idea I have is very similar. I would put in my hours at CHOP since I go there a lot for hearing and growth hormone tests as well as other tests. I think they might be glad to have me help. I could help in the audiology department.
p.s you can let me know if these are good ideas. These are just my first ideas. i'll try to come up with more ideas. sorry this letter is so long and that i added the icons.
We also have to do a school wide project, and I am going to be helping out with a group of kids from Constitution High School they are calling the group Franks for Frankie. The kids i'm working with are going to sell hot dog. there will also be activities for kids. We are going to raise money. We are going to have a teacher to supervise the groups and we get to choose who the teacher it is similar to what the school did for national history Day.Hopefully we can work this all out this kind of project is easier said than done. But with group effort i bet we can get it done.

N.H.D Reflection

NHD was a handful, but I learned a lot from this whole expierence that much I can say. There was a lot of work to do during the whole process. It started with choosing what I was going to do for my topic.I started out with the topics of fire fighters, women suffrage, getting rid of mayor Rizzo, and the underground Railroad. The next day My teacher gave me a book called The Under Ground Railroad by william still. That was how My project was on William Still and his life and what he did with he Underground Railroad.
personally I didn't like that we had to be so specific and picky with the annotations. I found just doing the annotations was long and tedious I had to go to the websites and books multiple time to find all the parts of the annotations.A lot of site didn't have an author. Or the sites were missing part of what I needed. Next year I'm going to get all of the site every single part ahead of time.
we had workshops for two hours the week or two before the event. I thought the workshops should be changed for next year A lot of people said the workshops were chaotic. I didn't like the workshops; since all I did was read my play for two hours which was helpful with helping me memorize my lines and stage directions but that's it.(Even though I didn't think they were helpful.)I guess that's an oximoron.I really don't know what to think of the workshops. It was helpful that one of the plays gave me some feedback.Though it was the day before N.H.D. I think the group s should have given more feedback to the plays.
I did my project on William Still who wrote a book on the Underground Railroad. My project was a play it was a solo play.It was a really fun project. I think the judges liked it.( It was hard to tell. what they thought) my play was fun I was William still as my character. in the play I told stories about important characters that were in William still's book. for example marie weems who disguised her self up as a man to escape,or William still's brother peter. His mom ran away when peter was a grownup he went to philadelphia to find his mom and found his brother. The judges asked me about how I thought of the topic I did my project on,how my play related to the theme of conflict and compromise.( An obvious question)
I may have hated N.H.D at times, but In the end I found the project worthwhile. I'l have the knowledge to do an even better project next year. next uyear I will come prepared for N.H,D knowing what is ahead of me. My family was so proud of me when they found out i'm going to cities which is the next level in the contest. what made it even cooler was I got the news on my dad's birthday. (My grandmom even wanted me to brag to everyone)

NHD process paper

This is my National History Process paper everyone had to write one except the people who did a paper for the type of project I did
Process Paper

I started with many possible topics for my National History Day project. I started out with different options: the underground railroad; how Mount Airy is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Philadelphia; people trying to get rid of Mayor Rizzo; and Suffragettes. I narrowed it down to Mt Airy being a diverse neighborhood or the underground railroad. The next day, I asked my social studies teacher which would be best. He handed me a book titled The Underground Rail Road. It was decided. I would do my report on the Underground Railroad which then evolved into a study of William Still who was known as “the Father of the Underground Rail Road.” William Still was the author of the book my teacher gave me. I have always been interested in the Underground Railroad and slavery. Prior to this research, I had never heard of William Still specifically, but knew of the underground railroad, Harriet Tubman, and stories of slaves trying to escape from slavery.
Initially, I began my research with the book William Still wrote himself; skimming through it to get some ideas. I then went to the library to checkout some books and went online to look at websites. I scheduled an interview at the Civil War and Underground Railroad Museum. I also interviewed a women named Gloria Still, who is the great great grand niece of Williams Still. Those two interviews and prior research completed last year on this topic in Constitution High’s archives were the most important sources. I used a variety of sources but needed to use more primary sources so I went back to my original sources.
I had some difficulty with the annotated bibliography. For a couple of the websites I couldn’t get all the information I needed. For example, the websites didn’t have the author or the date published, and if it didn’t have that information I then had to use part of the URL address. To do the MLA format correctly, you need all the pieces of information MLA format lists, otherwise it is wrong. The way I overcame those challenges was to go back to the book or website and get the information I needed.
For my project I chose to create a play. I chose this over the other projects because I enjoy acting and my teacher said that plays and papers aren’t done as often so those two categories have more of a chance of going to the next level of competition. I first thought of stories or characters that stood out to me. For example, Henry “Box” Brown who mailed himself to Philadelphia so he would be free was very interesting; or the story of Williams’s father buying his freedom from the plantation owner but he wasn’t allowed to buy the rest of his families’ freedom. The second step was to create a script after I choose the setting. I realized that my script was limited and needed to enrich Still’s experience so I included more dialogue about the context of my story and organizations that Still interacted with. The third step was rehearsing and revision as I rehearsed. When the steps are laid out they are: brainstorm, type, revise, add on, rehearse revise and rehearse.
This year’s National History Day theme is conflict and compromise. The conflict of my project is blacks were being forced to be slaves and work on plantations. Blacks wanted to live freely without being separated from the rest of their family and being treated as inanimate objects. The compromise was black slaves ran away and were helped/given aid by William Still at the Vigilant Committee in Philadelphia. The other conflict is the story of how blacks were being treated cruelly and inhumanely wasn’t being heard until William Still decided to record their stories.

William still play NHD

this is a play I wrote for my National History day project which is a competition. If you do well you go to the next levels city then if you do well enough you go to state. I don't know yet if I'm going to the next level but it was fun performing it.

William Still script

Characters
William Still, the main character, who is secretly keeping records about escaped slaves. Peter Still, William’s brother.
Henry “Box” Brown who mailed himself to William.
Maria Weems a female slave who disguised herself as a man to escape and wore a sling so no one would know she couldn’t write.
William and Ellen Craft married couple. Ellen dressed up as a man and pretended to be a “master of a slave” so the couple could escape from the South together. Eventually they traveled to England. Ellen had a bandage and crutch as part if her disguise.
Letitia, William Still’s wife
John Brown raided Harpers Ferry. Still’s hid and took care of John Brown’s two sons after Brown was hanged.

ACT ONE SCENE ONE
WILLIAM: (writing in journal. Say aloud) Dear diary, can you believe it? I can’t believe it. I have a brother and his name is Peter Still. I was doing my job at the Vigilance Committee, recording down important information about the escaped slaves that came here to Philadelphia for help and to find their family members. I am proud to say that my office is the first place a new freedman or woman comes for aid.

This afternoon, a man came to me and told me the story of how his mom ran away to be free and left him. His grandmother said, “One day you’re going to go to Phil-a-del-Phia can you say Feel-le-del-phea?” The man nodded to her question. Now he was in Philadelphia looking for his mom, Sydney Still. I froze at his heartfelt story. Peter looked scared as if I might call the police on him. He started to back away in fear. I told Peter I was his brother. I didn’t know I had a brother until he walked through the door.

This is when I realized that the records I was writing and recording were more important than I thought. The documents could be used to locate fugitive slave’s families or friends. In this job I’ve helped so many interesting people. (Look up thinking. Have pictures of documents taped in to journal show documents to audience.)

I’ll never forget the biggest surprise Henry “Box” Brown. He wanted to be free so badly he risked being turned up side down and in all different directions. He actually mailed himself to my office. The day he arrived my comrades and I opened the box and he popped out. (Have box in background get up and move to the box labeled this way up and look inside. Go and sit start to write again)

There was the young Miss Maria Weems or should I say “Mister” Weems. She thought of every thing. She disguised herself by dressing up as a man she wore a suit and a top hat. She wore a sling on one arm so no one would know she couldn’t write her name. She had a bandage over face since she didn’t grow facial hair. It came to me from Maria and other characters disguising as men was easier because men had more privileges than women. Men could move from around the country doing work.

ACT ONE SCENE TWO
WILLIAM
(Stand up and act like answering the door. Then move to the edge of the stage walk back and forth as if pacing) can I help you men this evening? Yes I am William still. (Nod at the invisible men Look like resting on edge of door.) You say a guard told you to come to a man named William still? You were on Harpers Ferry, the ship John brown just raided, and you are in need of shelter and aid. You men can go upstairs to the left there are some empty rooms you can use. John Brown should have waited to raid Harpers Ferry like Harriet Tubman and I told him to. (Act as if calling upstairs Letitia three more men have arrived from Harpers Ferry. Letitia, my wife, and I must take care of John’s two sons while he is away as well as six fugitive slaves and the three men from the boat. (Talk
softly to self as if trying to remember something looking down at the floor pace a tiny bit)
I need to buy clothes for five more people. I must record the stories. (Yawn look tired stop pacing)

It’s a tricky job keeping my records not to mention finding a place to hide the documents. I’ll hide them in a grave until it’s safe. No one will look there. At any point in time if anybody finds the documents I could be thrown in prison. (Act as if a shiver went down back.) I don’t want to be thrown in prison again; once is bad enough. Lets see who wrote to me in the mail. (Pick up envelope and start reading) Ahh, the queen sends a letter informing me the Crafts are in good hands. They are in disguise as a slave master and his slave. I sent them to the queen of England Where even slave catchers must treat them like royalty.
(William reads another letter and frowns at the bad language.) As I was saying there are huge conflicts with this job besides being caught. I just got another hate letter. It’s one of the most profane letters I’ve received since starting this job at the Vigilance committee. Calling me terrible names and threatening my life – all because they don’t like me aiding slaves to become free.(head to desk and start writing letter) I must write to Harriet and see if she knows about the fugitive slave law; and that this law says any African found will be taken back to the plantation or sold; even if they were safely in the North; it will really effect the under ground railroad making it harder to escape safely
I had my own coal and stove business. I housed many people who were escaping and I recorded the stories of at least 649 slaves. I am a man of many talents.

why you better give me an A

Dear Mr. Romero,
This is a letter about my grades letting you know that if my grade is lower than an A you will be hearing from me, my mom, Licorice, and if worse comes to worse My sister. She is not afraid to yell at any one trust me she may look cute but she's tough. I will get my whole family speak on my side if necessary. I care about my grades dearly and work hard as you can see. If you complain about my backpack and how heavy as it is wait until you fail me and I have more in my bag trying to catch up on the work so I can get a better grade.
Reason one class and homeroom wouldn’t be the same In the morning. We have intriguing conversations. We talk about what’s happened during the week or things were excited about happening in the near future. You care enough to ask if I’m having a good day or not. I can comfortably talk about Webkinz and Club penguin with you. Most of my friends don’t go on these sites.
Reason two I am great on the newspaper. I wrote three pieces just for the first issue and those were great articles. (DON’T SAY CRANK IT C.H.S!!!! Or else. can you imagine the newspaper with out my articles in the newspaper. you can’t can you. It’s just obviously would not be the same. If I fail I would not be at the meetings I would be home working on catching up.

The Third reason is what happens after my parents read the single letter grade: punishment. My parents would probably ground me and there are three ways to do so, no dessert, no T.V, no or any electronics including going on Webkinz; or all of the above all at the same time. Hopefully I can use my computer for school work. If there’s no Webkinz Licorice and Kiwi will get sick. If that were not bad enough I’d feel awful about the grade and punish my self.

In conclusion, there are many reasons you shouldn’t even consider putting any thing bad on my report card. I will have to catch up and it will change my life style. I really don’ t want to go to Saturday school. You said that is requirement of any one who fails your class.

Phillis wheatley

In the United States people celebrate black history month, and a lot of important people including Phillis Wheatley. We still remember all about her past and her writing, and her words.
Family
No one knows about Phillils’s Wheatley’s real parents since she was taken away at a young age. We do know about her master. Her master’s name was John Wheatley. He was a Boston Merchant. John wanted a personal servant for his wife: Susannah so he gave Phillis to her. Even Though Phillis was a slave she did not do as much work because she had delicate health. The Wheatley’s were also very religious people. They were a member of the south church including Phillis. (It was very rare that she went) He was also impressed by her intelligence.

Background
There is no actual birth date known for Phillis since she was captured at the age of seven or eight. The year she was born was around 1753-1784. The country she was born is now known as Senegal, which is in West Africa. She was very intelligent she learned three languages: Greek, Latin and English. She was baptized in the year 1771. She wrote a poem about the Boston Massacre. She ended up having a very bad marriage, and two of three kids died. She died young at the age of 31.

Was she serious?

phillis Wheatley wrote this poem about being brought from Africa:
Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land,
Taught my benighted soul to understand
That there's a God, that there's a Saviour too:
Once I redemption neither sought nor knew.
Some view our sable race with scornful eye,
"Their colour is a diabolic dye."
Remember, Christians, Negroes, black as Cain,
May be refin'd, and join th' angelic train.´

During colonial times people read that poem and thought Phillis Wheatley was Brilliant. (Especially for a black slave. Most slaves didn’t get any education) People still read the exact poem today, but instead of thinking she was brilliant they now think that she was just being sarcastic. They think She wasn’t seriously thanking the Colonists for taking her away from her homeland. For example, look at the words She uses in the poem: There’s a savior, sable race, pagan land, race with scornful eye, Black as Cain. (She is referring to Cain from the bible and the mark god put on Cain for killing his brother. Some people say the mark is black people) It is hard to know whether she meant it seriously or in a sarcastic way. Maybe the point is to make us ponder. That’ s what writer s do make us think and ponder.

William Still Thesis Statement

William still was known as “ the father of the underground railroad” He helped black slaves voices be heard. He was the first to record the fugitive slaves Journeys to Philadelphia. He realized how important the records were the day his brother came to his office and introduced him self as peter Still; The story of how Peter’s mom left him(to escape to freedom for the second time) and then found his brother he knew he never had. The story was very touching. Slavery tore families apart. Still’s records tried to help bring them back together it was the organizations job to do so. William still recorded the stories of 2700 people. In some instances the records did reunite families/friends. One of the reasons this is a major event in our history is so we know how the people felt and so it won’t be lost forever.
